International Forum on Nuclear Energy, Nuclear Non-proliferation and Nuclear Security
- Measures to ensure nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear security for the back end of nuclear fuel cycle and regional cooperation in Asia -
Purpose of the Forum

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) organizes an international forum on nuclear energy and nuclear non-proliferation once every year to invite experts to make keynote speeches and join panel discussions focusing on up-to-date issues of the time.

The current issues on the use of nuclear energy, nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear security in Japan include the role of nuclear energy in the future energy policy and the approach to the back end of the nuclear fuel cycle as described in the "Innovative Strategy for Energy and the Environment" issued in September 2012. No matter what policies are adopted, nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear security must be ensured. From a global viewpoint, extension of nuclear power generation is expected in Asia. We therefore need to prepare specific measures for ensuring nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear security while proceeding with the use of nuclear energy.

Under these circumstances, the 2012 international forum was organized, with the focus put on the back end of the nuclear fuel cycle, to discuss challenges involved in nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear security as well as measures to overcome such challenges and a multilateral cooperation framework as a measure to ensure nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear security in the use of nuclear energy in Asian region.
